Chin Surgery
Cosmetic surgeries fall into three groups: facial, breast, and body lifting/contouring. All procedures are designed to give the patient a more youthful, firm, and symmetrical appearance.
Who is it for?
Chin surgery can be performed to enhance or reduce the size of the chin in order to give the face balance. Chin surgery is often paired with rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to achieve the most natural, balanced facial proportions. To enhance the size and shape of the chin, Dr. Nguyen may use implants or a procedure called sliding genioplasty, which repositions the chin bone more prominently. To reduce chin size, Dr. Nguyen will surgically reshape the bone.
How does it work?
- Chin implants are inserted through an incision below the chin or inside the mouth into a pocket Dr. Nguyen creates by stretching the surrounding tissue.
- Sliding genioplasty involves cutting the chin bone and repositioning it, then fixing it with titanium screws or wires. The incisions for sliding genioplasty are made inside the mouth or underneath the lower lip.
- Chin reduction involves incisions made inside the mouth or underneath the chin. Dr. Nguyen will then reshape the chin bone.

What happens after the procedure?
Chin surgery recovery is generally faster than recovery from other cosmetic surgery procedures, but it is no less important to be careful and to follow Dr. Nguyen’s instructions. You will likely have some swelling and/or bruising around the surgery site, and you may need to stick to a soft diet for a few days. It will also be important that you properly brush your teeth and rinse your mouth to reduce the risk of infection. You should be able to return to work within a few days, and Dr. Nguyen will remove your sutures approximately one week after surgery.
