Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

The breast lift procedure is for any woman who wants to regain the lift and perkiness in her breasts lost due to factors such as aging, gravity, genetics, pregnancy/breastfeeding, and weight gain and loss.

Who is it for?

The breast lift procedure is for any woman who wants to regain the lift and perkiness in her breasts lost due to factors such as aging, gravity, genetics, pregnancy/breastfeeding, and weight gain and loss. The loss of lift in the breasts is a condition called ptosis. Minor breast ptosis occurs when the breast crease and the nipple are level. Moderate breast ptosis occurs when the nipple is lower than the breast crease. Severe breast ptosis occurs when the nipple is the breast’s lowest point.

A breast lift not only lifts the breasts, but can also improve their shape and the placement of the nipples/areolas. The breast lift procedure can also be used to correct uneven breasts. Breast lifts are not for women who want to increase the size or fullness of their breasts in addition to improving their breasts’ placement and perkiness. If you are interested in both outcomes, Dr. Nguyen may recommend that you combine your breast lift with a breast augmentation.

How does it work?

Your surgery will be determined by your degree of ptosis—minor breast ptosis can be remedied with an incision around the areola only, whereas more severe breast ptosis will require a vertical incision from the areola to the lower part of the breast as well. After making the incision, Dr. Nguyen will remove breast tissue and re- position the nipple/areola at a higher point on the breast so that the breasts sit higher and lose their droopy appearance.

What happens after the procedure?

Because the breast lift is performed under general anesthesia, you will need 1-2 days to recover from the cloudy feeling that will probably result. You will most likely experience soreness and/or tenderness, but you will have been prescribed pain medication to help with these symptoms. You may also experience swelling, bruising, itching along the incisions, and some change in your nipple sensitivity, but these effects should diminish within a few weeks.

Immediately after breast lift surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze and you will need to wear a special gentle bra, which will soon be replaced by a surgical bra that you will need to wear up to three months post-surgery. These special garments will allow your breasts to adjust to their new shape and help you achieve optimal results.

You should be able to return to work approximately one week after your surgery, but you should avoid strenuous activities for 4-6 weeks. Dr. Nguyen will go over all of the recovery information with you in detail to help you get the best possible outcome from your breast lift surgery.
